Mach-Zehnder interferometer

Optical sensing principles, especially interferometric principles, are extremely sensitive, hardly susceptible to electro-magnetic interference and allow for additional interrogation through e.g. spectral fingerprinting. Through the special lay-out of the MZI-chip, other disturbing influences such as temperature changes can be minimized. Such a device can be very suitable for sensing applications as the basic sensing principle - refractive index variation - is generic and can be made specific with the application of a tailored sensing layer.

Involvement of LioniX

Based on the know-how on Mach-Zehnder interferometer based sensors, built up in the Lightwaves Devices Group, LioniX has developed and batchwise fabricated MZI-sensor chips which integrate various optical functions: planar waveguides, splitters, sensing windows, modulators, polarizers and fiber-chip connectors.
